Statement
Regarding BOEM's decision to postpone the auction of leases of Wind Energy Areas.
The postponement of Oregon’s offshore wind leases provides a pivotal opportunity for South Coast communities and Tribes to actively participate in shaping a renewable energy future that is sustainable, ethical, and equitable for all.
Historically, extractive industries have fueled economic growth, but often at the expense of social equity and the environment. To achieve truly sustainable and fair outcomes, we must prioritize environmental, cultural, and social considerations equally alongside economic gains. By doing so, we can ensure long-term prosperity which benefits both people and the planet.
Tribes have shown strong interest in leading efforts toward a sustainable future. The Indigenous worldview is based on the belief that everything is interconnected, offering a holistic perspective that differs from the western approach of examining things in isolation. Instead of focusing on individual components, the indigenous perspective emphasizes the relationships between all elements of life, creating a deeper understanding of how our actions have long-lasting effects. It encourages us to consider the impact of our choices not only in the present but also for future generations. This interconnected way of thinking promotes a greater sense of responsibility for the world and the legacy we leave.
Timeline of Events in Years
Deploying Floating Offshore Wind requires many years before turbines are on the water. Our Community needs to participate in the process to guarantee the best outcomes for our coastal citizens, ecology, and economy.
